Why Should You be in the TV Magnet Program?

The Television Magnet Program at Lakeview has been a magnet since 2001 and is open to students of any grade level who choose to apply.

Throughout the first year of TV Production, students begin to learn about the history of television and radio. Since the classes are small (only about 15 students each), doing projects and group assignments are easy.

“My first year in TV was exciting because we starting working with equipment and the editing software,” said junior Alexis Flores, Vice President of TV SkillsUSA

Sophomore year is the start of a new side in the TV Magnet Program. This year students are more hands-on with scripting, directing, and editing their projects. All the while, they are learning how to work in a real-world studio environment.

“TV has given me the chance to see what goes on behind the scenes and really pay more attention to the whole filming aspect,” sophomore Michael Milner said.

Learning how to produce the school announcements is a challenge but definitely a great experience. Students learn the proper news anchor techniques and post production skills to prepare for employment in the television industry.

“I’ve learned how to use a camera, how to white balance, and all the logistics of camera work,” junior John Bayonne said.

Seniors are given the opportunity to work with clients and start preparing for college. Students who further their careers in the television industry are given a “head start” when attending college, President of TV SkillsUSA, Martha Villalobos says, since they’ve been in the program all four years of high school.

If you don’t have a plan for high school or college yet, join the TV magnet. Students in the program are given an opportunity no other high school in GISD has. With teachers like Mr. Tristan and Mr. Pascal, you won’t regret joining.
