GISD Patty Granville Awards

Every year the Theater troupes from every Garland ISD school get together at the Curtis Culwell Center to celebrate theater and spend time together at the Patty Granville Awards. However, this year, the awards included a Theater Prom.

“The Patty Granville Awards were exciting,” junior Jessica Evans said. “My favorite part was probably the dancing because I got to dance with my friends and have fun.”

The Patty Granville committee teams up with Veritex Bank in Garland to prepare scholarships to give out each year to one student at each Garland ISD school. Senior Madison Plunk won the scholarship for Lakeview this year.

“Seeing my best friend win a scholarship that only seven kids in the district get makes me so excited for her future,” junior Tim Kihneman said. “She’s really going places, and yeah I’m going to miss her, but seeing her go farther in life is greater than my need for her to stay by me.”

At each school, a student gets awarded the Patty Patron award which is for the underclassmen who has seen the most GISD shows out of their troupe members. Lakeview’s winner was junior Mandana Burton.

“I felt proud winning something for doing what I love,” Burton said.

For the seniors, it was their last time to attend the Patty Granville Awards as high schoolers. It’s one of the last nights filled with chocolate covered strawberries, dancing to show tunes, and hang out with their favorite underclassmen before heading off to college

“It was so awesome!” senior Julissa Hernandez said. “So much dancing and little dessert foods that were both amazing. Being able to be open with other theater troupes is always a fun time.”
