Track Teams Advance to Area Meet

The boys track team placed third with 98 points in the UIL 6A District 09 track meet, held Wednesday, March 31. The team placed behind Wylie and Sachse high schools. Several runners qualified for the area track meet, gaining points for the program and leading to the third place finish. 

After not having a track season last year due to COVID-19, the Patriots were looking for back-to-back district championships, but ultimately fell short in the end.

Senior Kwame Long qualified for the area track meet in the 100-meter dash, coming in third place with a time of 10.96 seconds. In the 400-meter dash, junior Zavion Wright qualified with a time of 49.30 seconds, coming in second place, and junior Hananiah Soloman placed fourth overall with a time of 50.40 seconds. Solomon also placed second overall in the 800-meter dash, coming in at 2:05.26. 

The fourth and final open event qualifier was senior hurdler Tarrence Davis, Jr. He qualified in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles, as well as the triple jump. In the 110’s he ran a 15.45 and came in third place, and in the 300’s he qualified in second place with a 42.48. Davis placed fourth in the triple jump.

The team also qualified for area in all three relay events with two second place finishes and a fourth place finish.

Junior X’Zavien Campbell and senior Ikechukwu Iwunnah qualified for area in field events. Campbell qualified in shot put, placing fourth, and Iwunnah placed second in the discus.

For the girls team, senior Jaliya Sharp advanced to area with a second place finish in the high jump. Junior Sha-Taijah Henderson advanced with a fourth place finish in the high jump, and junior Oluchukwu Iwunnah advanced with a third place finish in discus.

The area track meet was held in Rockwall on April 15.
