WandaVision Show Review

Warning: This review contains many spoilers!!

After push back of production of Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, WandaVision is the first show to premiere on Disney+. This nine-episode show picked up a couple of weeks after the events of Avengers: Endgame where Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) has created a town called “Westview” in New Jersey. The show premiered on January 15 and released a new episode each week, and then added a behind-the-scenes episode after the finale.

Many questions were brought up about WandaVision of when exactly the show would take place. Vision (Paul Bettany) was killed off in Avengers: Infinity War by Thanos to steal the mind stone and viewers knew that it was not possible for him to come back to life. However, Wanda was able to create a new Vision using her powers.

WandaVision starts off with a bit of confusion because it opens with a theme song and in a sitcom-style show set in the 1950s. This approach to an MCU movie or show is the first of any to take a different format and many viewers were hesitant to continue watching, even I was. They did not know if every episode would be in a sitcom-style show or when the show would transition to color after starting in black-and-white.

Each episode progresses into a new decade and viewers see that through the different designs of furniture, clothing, and hairstyles. Wanda is suddenly pregnant and has the twins, Billy and Tommy, all in one episode. The nosy neighbor, Agnes, becomes an important character to the show because viewers realize she is Agatha Harkness, a powerful witch and antagonist of the show. Like any sitcom, there are commercials in real life that all have to pertain to Wanda’s past.

The attempts to reach into Wanda from outside of the Hex were what threw everyone off guard, including me. A man in a beekeeper outfit comes from the sewage line and Wanda tells them, “No,” and reverses time before that man shows up. I thought somehow Vision would recognize that she went back in time but he did not. Then, she changes the black-and-white to all in color and now the sitcom is set in color. Not only that, but when a radio clock stops playing music to a man saying, “Who’s doing this to you Wanda?” Wanda realizes she is no longer alone.

WandaVision introduces Monica Rambeau as an adult, the daughter of Maria Rambeau from Captain Marvel. She gets powers after going through the Hex multiple times. WandaVision sets up the notion that she will return to the MCU in Captain Marvel 2 to be alongside Captain Marvel and Nick Fury. Monica is also the first black woman superhero to appear in the MCU. It will be interesting to see more of her powers later on.

However, not everything ends with a happy ending and that is the case for Vision and the twins. Vision from the Hex and Vision from SWORD square off with each other and Hex Vision gives White Vision all of his memories back. However, before they can continue to talk, White Vision flies out of the Hex and never returns. I am skeptical about where he may go and the next time they will get to see him, but it will be fascinating when he returns and what will be different about him.

It was pleasant to see the twins take up the powers of Wanda’s brother, Pietro, of speed and Vision’s ability to read minds. Billy has the power to be incredibly fast while Tommy has the power to read minds, and that is why he can feel Vision in pain. While they did end up disappearing in WandaVision, they will appear later on and will be a part of Young Avengers.

As for Wanda, she will reappear in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the second movie of Doctor Strange. Doctor Strange and Wanda will learn more about her powers as now being the Scarlet Witch. It was also the first time that Wanda was called the “Scarlet Witch” and I was so excited to hear that.

It is not confirmed if there will be a second season of WandaVision just yet, but if there is, I predict it will most likely not be premiered anytime soon. Season one is just the start of the fourth phase of MCU and will have to fit the second season somewhere after phase four is completed. WandaVision sets up a good introduction to Phase 4 because while there was a cliffhanger, it was not as major as most. It sets up the events for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Wanda already learns the full potential of her powers.

Overall, I liked the different approach to add the style of the sitcom but then transitioning to an actual movie-like platform. It was cool to see the projections of the TV transition to a different projection when we entered the real world from Wanda’s world. The only downside of WandaVision that made everyone a bit disappointed, was the failure of mentioning Mephisto, Wanda and Pietro’s brother. Everyone believed he would show up, especially after Pietro was recreated, but it ended up not being something fulfilled.

WandaVision is now premiering on Disney+ with all nine episodes available.
