Kanye’s New Song: Gibberish Bait or Enticing Something More?

Kanye’s long awaited new single, “Lift Yourself” was finally released on April 30. But it wasn’t what any of us thought it would be. This new song seems to be more of joke than anything. If you’ve been lucky enough to have not heard it yet, I’ll break it down for you – not that there’s much to break down.

The song starts off with a familiar sound, like something you’d hear on Kanye’s debut album: “The College Dropout.” The song, like much of “College Dropout,” is sample based. Kanye seems to be teasing the ears of longtime fans with this song; he brings their hopes for an “old Kanye” revival as high as they’ve ever been, only to be torn down when he starts rapping if you can even call it that.

“I thought it was going to be some classic Kanye stuff,” sophomore Josue Prado said. “I can’t say I wasn’t disappointed.”

After nearly two minutes of pure instrumental, Kanye begins to hype up his listeners by shouting “this next verse though.” Then, the music stops followed by Kanye’s long awaited verse: “poopy-di scoop, scoop-diddy whoop, whoop-di-scoop-di-poop.”

Yeah, that’s right, it was nothing but gibberish. Very Anticlimactic.

“I thought it was funny how his verse was nothing but gibberish,” freshman Pablo Cisneros said. “That’s Kanye for ya.”

Fans were wondering why Kanye would bait his fans like this. Maybe he just wanted to be funny? Maybe he lost his creative touch? Maybe it was all a stunt for his new album? Who knows?

“Why would he do us like that?” sophomore Alexander Carrillo said. “I just wanted to hear a new Kanye song.”
