R. Kelly’s Backlash May Backfire

The TimesUp Movement has recently created the hashtag #MuteRKelly to silence the singer, songwriter, and producer due to the rumors and news for decades of his mistreatment and sexual misconduct against women of color.

“Today we join the call to #MuteRKelly and insist on safety & dignity for all women. We demand appropriate investigations and inquiries into the allegations of R. Kelly’s abuse made by women of color & their families for over two decades now #WOC #TIMESUP,” Kerry Washington said in a Tweet on April 30.

The organization TimesUp wrote a letter, which was published by The Root, that spoke to all women hurt, abused, mistreated, or those who were affected in anyway by R. Kelly or Bill Cosby. It essentially gave them hope that no one can just get away with the hurt that Kelly and Cosby caused, and all who ever sexually assaulted a woman will have a day of reckoning.

“To Our Fellow Women of Color,” the letter began. “We see you. We hear you. Because we are you. For too long, our community has ignored our pain. The pain we bear is a burden that too many women of color have had to bear for centuries. The wounds run deep. As women of color within Time’s Up, we recognize that we have a responsibility to help right this wrong.”

The letter even brought up Bill Cosby and his trial – which he was found guilty on three counts of aggravated indecent assault. They stated that Bill Cosby’s trial is one step toward addressing these ills, but it is just a start.

The letter also introduced #MuteRKelly in the letter, and deciding to stand by those who boycott R. Kelly for the sexual abuse and assault he brings upon women.

“To this end, today we join an existing online campaign called #MuteRKelly,” the letter announced. “Over the past 25 years, the man known publicly as R. Kelly has sold 60 million albums, toured the globe repeatedly and accumulated hundreds of millions of plays on radio and streaming services.”

And, with all those views, sales, and touring, R. Kelly’s stock is still rising – despite the numerous sexual assault allegations and black women coming out to talk about their experiences with R. Kelly. This includes him forcing women to join his supposed sex cult and his 21 counts of child pornography back in 2008.

Linda Mensch, R. Kelly’s attorney, denied the recent allegations against her client.

“Mr. Robert Kelly is both alarmed and disturbed at the recent revelations attributed to him,” she told ABC. “Mr. Kelly unequivocally denies such allegations and will work diligently and forcibly to pursue his accusers and clear his name.”

According to R. Kelly, it’s too late to attempt snatch his music career away from him.

To be truthfully honest, he may be right – even though Spotify recently removed R. Kelly from their playlists – his streams has unfortunately increased since.
