Help Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria

Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico on September 18, and left the island powerless. Not only is the country powerless, but they haven’t had running water since. We can all help contribute to Puerto Ricans, but what is our president doing about it?

“Texas & Florida are doing great but Puerto Rico, which was already suffering from broken infrastructure & massive debt, is in deep trouble..” president Donald J. Trump said in a tweet.

Puerto Ricans have been suffering and trying to survive with all they’ve got for about two weeks now. Our president is willing to help residents in Texas and Florida, but Puerto Rico’s infrastructure and “massive debt” is what’s keeping them from receiving all the possible help they need.

Instead of Mr. Trump arguing about NFL players on twitter, he should be worried about the welfare of his United States citizens. Although Puerto Rico is not considered a state in a America, it was granted U.S. citizenship on March 17, 1917.

Trump cannot help Puerto Rico right away. However, he can do way more than what he’s doing right now. More military resources could be sent to Puerto Rico to provide more for the 3.4 million people with no power.

Of course it would cost a lot of money to help Puerto Rico, but we can’t just sit here and watch this happen to our people. They are citizens just as much as we are. Now of course, President Trump has provided food and water to those on the island, but that is not enough for them to survive.

“This is a message for President Trump: Thank you for calling San Juan yesterday and listening for our mayday call” San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz said on CNN. “But sir, there’s 77 other towns that are waiting. They’re waiting anxiously and will be very grateful to you and to the American people if you continue to step up. Again, Mr. Trump, we appreciate everything you are doing and we know it can be done faster. Help us save lives. We will be forever grateful.”

There’s a variety of things we as American citizens can do to help our friends next door. You just have to look around. Several GoFundMe pages are set up and you can donate with a minimum of $5.
