Coachella: Background and Weekend One Coverage

Since its creation in 1999, the The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival has been host to some of the music industry’s biggest names. Thus, giving it it’s status as one of the most famous and renowned music festivals, not just in the United States, but all over the world.

The lineups for each year’s festival seem stacked every year with anyone who’s anyone appearing in the Valley. This year proved no different with headliners Beyonce, The Weeknd, and Eminem leading the charge followed by other notable acts like Vince Staples, Post Malone, SZA, BROCKHAMPTON, Tyler, The Creator, Cardi B, and so many more.

Some of the notable Weekend One performances included The Weeknd’s Emotional performance of some of the tracks off his latest album “My Dear Melancholy.”

Friday night also saw Long Beach rapper Vince Staples perform some cuts of his sophomore studio album “Big Fish Theory.” During his set, he brought out Multi-Grammy winning and now Pulitzer-winning rapper Kendrick Lamar, one of the headliners of last year’s festival.

Hip-Hop collective BROCKHAMPTON was featured at the festival for the first time with the self proclaimed “Internet’s First Boy Band,” taking a page out of Kanye West’s book with a backing Orchestra for their performance.

One of the biggest names to appear at the festival was internet meme Mason Ramsey AKA the yodeling Walmart kid – who appeared on stage to perform after going viral earlier in the year.

Beyonce was at the center of attention in the first week of Coachella by putting on a nearly two hour long performance that featured her husband, Hip-Hop mogul Jay-Z, her sister Solange, and a reunited Destiny’s Child.

Beyonce’s performance was considered the highlight receiving critical acclaim for her historic show that featured her support for the Historically Black Colleges or HBCUs and also had Queen Bey in a variety of extravagant outfits.

Coachella’s first week is always considered a massive deal, and is often the bigger of the two weekends, but this year may be different or par for the course. Regardless, the first week set the bar high for the following one, so one can only hope it’s better.
