“The Cloverfield Paradox” is a mixture of sci-fi fantasy and suspense/thriller, and of course the usual foreboding nature of everything going completely wrong – except it’s in space this time.

The movie had its lackluster moments, and I often found myself zoning out or even picking up my phone out of sheer disinterest. It definitely did not have the jaw-dropping moments that I hope to see in sci-fi movies, especially after its predecessor “10 Cloverfield Lane,” but it did have a moderate amount of suspense that can keep viewers mildly entertained.

This rendition of the “Cloverfield” franchise travels to what may have been sometime before the events of the original “Cloverfield,” and follows Ava Hamilton and the rest of the team on the Cloverfield Space Station as they prepare to initiate their test of the Shepherd particle accelerator. From then on, Ava and her team face literally everything going wrong; the only thing that could not have happened was the Space Station self-destructing. Oh, wait…if you were able to make it the end of the movie than of course one of the last things you expect to happen – happened. The Cloverfield Space Station self-destructed, but per most movies plots, some members of the team escaped whole and alive.

The story overall was predictable, minus a few times that genuinely had me somewhat surprised, but it must have been surprise from half-heartedly guessing the scene only for it to actually come true.

Now, the movie itself was not horrendous. It did quite well in providing an adequate amount of thrill and following up to the two previous “Cloverfield” movies in its lore, but it was definitely not an astonishing movie. If “The Cloverfield Paradox” had been released in theatres it most likely would have not done as well as “Cloverfield” and “10 Cloverfield Lane.”

So if you thoroughly enjoyed the previous “Cloverfield” films and you genuinely want to know more about the “Cloverfield” universe, then the “The Cloverfield Paradox” is for you. If not, then you can always watch the movie anyway if there’s nothing else on Netflix.
