Dallas Police Shooting

On April 24, a Dallas police officer was fatally shot outside of the Northeast Dallas Home Depot after responding to a shoplifting call. Officer Rogelio Santander was honored May 1 at the Lake Pointe church in Rockwall. He was only on the force for three years.

Friends and family from all over the nation joined to share touching stories about who Santander was as a person and as an officer.

“I have great respect for him, for everything he did,” family friend Oscar Romero said at the tribute that was covered by Fox 4 News. “He had his mind set of goals and he did them. He achieved them. He had more goals. I know his life was cut short, a great tragedy. But he was still a great young man.”

While Santander is the only one so far to be pronounced dead, he was not the only victim. Officer Crystal Almeida and Home Depot loss prevention officer Scott Painter were also injured. They were all trying to take the suspect into custody. The suspect was not reported to have been a threat to himself or any officers.  Almeida and Painter are still in the hospital in critical condition.

“Shooting suspect Armando Juarez remains behind bars on charges of capital murder, aggravated assault on a public servant, and aggravated assault in retaliation,” CNN Reporter Jennifer Lindgren said in an article. “His bond sits at more than $4 million. Sources said that Juarez was not handcuffed after being told that he was going to jail, which allowed him to pull out a gun and start shooting.”
