Korean Peace Meetings

This past Friday, April 27, North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un became the first North Korean leader to walk past the demilitarized zone since the founding of the country. The purpose of this crossing was to meet with the South Korean president Moon Jae-In to discuss matters concerning both of these countries, including denuclearization and possible unification.

The two nations agreed to move forward with a peace treaty formally ending the Korean War that brought the separation of the Koreas over 50 years ago.

“It’s about time they started talking to each other,” freshman Samuel Cervantes said. “I thought they’d never do so.”

This meeting surprised many of Lakeview’s students, including sophomore Mina Rubealcaba, who says she would have never imagined this a year ago.

“I was really surprised when I first heard about it,” Rubealcaba said. “I would’ve never even thought this was possible a year ago cause of how crazy things were.”

Other students, like sophomore Josue Prado, weren’t so surprised at all upon hearing the news of the meeting.

“I knew it was bound to happen,” Prado said, “I don’t know why everyone is all surprised and stuff, I saw it a mile away.”

The news brought a great amount of relief for students who greatly feared the possibility of nuclear war with the East Asian country.

“I’m just relieved that the crisis won’t escalate anymore,” freshman Pedro Carrillo said. “I thought something big was for sure going to happen, but I was not expecting this.”
