STAAR Testing Begins

The State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness, also known as STAAR, is a series of standardized testing consisting of English, Math, History and Science.

Students start taking the test in the third grade, all the way through the eleventh grade. The goal is to see how the students have improved through each grade level.

“I saw I got a better score each time I took the STAAR test,” sophomore Jenna Warlock said. “I was more comfortable with the testing environment.”

Students taking the STAAR test are tested on how well they can answer science questions, solve math problems and understand reading and writing comprehension.

“The writing sections were always doable,” sophomore Joshua Benevidous said. “I would say it helped me get better at my essays and quick writes.”

Teachers and Students prepare for the STAAR test every school year. Opinions vary from students and teachers.

“Standardized testing is proven to not improve students’ performances, but it just hinders their creativity,” senior Alexis Rodriguez said.

To high schoolers, STAAR testing means preparing and reviewing concepts they learned.

“STAAR is just a test we take every year,” junior Sierra Lack said. “I don’t see much importance to it.”
