On Monday, March 19, sophomore Louder Than A Bomb member, Alexis Castillo was announced winner of the Giselle Robinson literary award and won a scholarship to attend the prestigious summer writing program held in the University of Pennsylvania.

“I was in absolute elation when I found out I had won,” said Castillo. “I felt an overwhelming sense of achievement and couldn’t believe it.”

The scholarship will provide Castillo with an opportunity to expand her literary skills and expose her to different styles of writing in the fields of memoirs, creative writing, poetry, fiction screenwriting and comics, as well as provide constructive feedback on her work.

“I look forward to learning all that there is to learn while I’m there.” Castillo said.

The summer writing program would normally cost around $2,750, but with the scholarship, Castillo will not spend a dime. The scholarship will cover her travel and accommodation expenses.

“I’m very thankful that the scholarship will pay for my expenses,” Castillo said.

The news came as a surprise to Castillo; she had to compete against eight other Dallas poets – two of which attend Lakeview.

“I had to win against a handful of other poets from the Dallas area, all who have such great talent,” Castillo said.

Castillo says that she is very thankful of having received such an opportunity through the LTAB program here at Lakeview.

“My gratitude extends beyond words,” said Castillo. “I am appreciative that I have the chance to follow a successful path.”
