Trump’s State of The Union Address Gets Fact Checked

President Donald J. Trump delivered his first State on the Union (SOTU) speech on Tuesday, January 30, 2018. The President’s speech lasted for one hour and 20 minutes, making it the third longest speech in history of the SOTU addresses.

Trump talked about a variety of things, but the most important things he addressed were the biggest tax cuts and reforms, rising wages, immigration programs, and the future of America.

Some people had mixed feelings about President Trump’s speech on Tuesday night, and whether or not he was spreading fake news.

According to Jeanne Sahadi, Sam Petulla and Tami Luhby from CNN, “tax reform is no different.”

Tax analysts and treasury data contradict the statement from President Trump that tax cuts in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act are the biggest in U.S. history.

“After years of wage stagnation, we are finally seeing rising wages,” Trump said during his speech which caught the attention of Tami Luhby and Patrick Gillespie from CNNMoney.

“Last year, wages grew an average of 2.6 percent – the same rate as 2016,” Luhby and Gillespie said. “The Federal Reserve hopes to see wages increase about 3.5 percent annually.”

Lastly, Trump went on the say that the diversity visa lottery is, “a program that randomly hands out green cards without any regard for skill, merit, or the safety of our people.”

According to Tal Kopan of CNN, President Trump’s statement that the diversity visa lottery hands out green cards at random is misleading and false.

“By law, they are required to have at least a high school education or equivalent and work experience that requires specialized training,” Kopan wrote. “And they also must be screened for any form of ineligibility, including security risks, and interviewed before they receive a visa.”
