You CAN do it!

With the holidays just around the corner, it’s time to to get into the holiday spirit and what better way to do so than to donate some canned goods to the Lakeview Centennial annual canned food drive!

The canned food drive will run through November 17 and students from all grade levels are encouraged to participate by donating whatever they can. Boxes will be located in the main office for students to go and drop off their donations.

“We really do want kids to donate if possible,” Student Council sponsor Amy Davis said.

The school is hosting a canned food drive competition between the hallways. The classroom with the top number of cans donated in each hallway will receive a special surprise that has yet to be announced. To be sure your classroom wins, make sure to mark your cans with your B4 room number!

“We made the competition so that more people would want to donate,” Davis said. “Each winning classroom will receive a special surprise.”

Some students, like freshman Samuel Cervantes, say that the competition will result in a high outcome of donations.

“The contest drives the competitiveness of people,” Cervantes said. “Everyone’s gonna want their class to win. It was a pretty smart idea.”

Last school year, the drive helped raise over 1,000 cans for families across Garland. This year, Davis said that she is hoping to exceed last year’s outcome to help the community.

“We’re aiming to raise the same, if not more, than what we did last year,” Davis said. “At least a thousand should be good.”

The proceeds will be donated to local families in Garland who otherwise might not be able to obtain food for the upcoming holidays.

“All the cans are donated to a local Garland food pantry,” Davis said. “From there, they are distributed among the city.”

If you haven’t already, make sure to donate what you can. Winners will be announced November 17, so make sure your classroom wins!
