Sophomore Kassidy Belcher is an artist, JV cheerleader, and second year member of Safe Haven.

She enjoys drawing and advancing her art skills through different sketch subjects.

“I like to draw people mostly,” Belcher said. “Just general things that’ll help me improve.”

She has been cheering since the fourth grade, and she used to cheer competitively. She quit in order to focus more on school.

“I just wanted to focus more on my studies,” Belcher said.

Belcher hopes to make the varsity cheer team her junior year, and feels confident in her ability to do so.

“I have some tumbling,” Belcher said. “I don’t think I’ll have any problem getting on.”

Her cheer coach, Michelle West, said that Belcher has many positive qualities about her.

“She’s always willing to try anything we ask of her,” West said. “She’s very dependable.”

West said that she has seen many improvements in Belcher in the time that she has known her.

“She’s really come out of her shell and she is not pretentious,” West said. “She is who she is and she accepts herself for who she is.”

Joining Safe Haven was important to Belcher and her brother, who both identify as LGBTQ+.

“I knew how much it meant for my brother,” Belcher said. “And being apart of the LGBTQ+ community myself, it seemed like a good idea.”

She said that Safe Haven has given her a place to be social and figure out who she is, as well as feel validated.

“I’ve gained plenty of new friends,” Belcher said. “I’ve gained more knowledge about my community that I didn’t know before.”
