The Promise Leading Students to Success
The Dallas County Promise is back for a second year in a row. With senior year rolling by fast, the encouragement from teachers to sign the pledge is increasing daily.
By offering free acceptance to any of the seven community colleges in the Dallas area with little requirements and the ability to transfer to the University of North Texas at Dallas, the Promise is looking to alleviate the money aspect of college.
“It gives students two years of college free,” history teacher Alexes Terry, a teacher assisting with the Promise, said.
Aiming to create more opportunities for all students to pursue and be able to achieve an education past high school, the Dallas County Promise applies to students who meet the the deadlines and who qualify for in-state tuition regardless income.
“One of the big deterrents that we see in education is that the reason why a lot of students don’t go to college is because they don’t have the money to pay for it,” Terry said.
Students are already taking advantage of this opportunity. Senior Saray Enriquez has signed the pledge and is looking forward to the benefits provided.
“I have signed up for the Promise so I can save money for the long run,” she said. “I will use the Promise to help me get my associates and save up more money for my four year plan.”
The Dallas County Promise may not be most student’s first choice, but it definitely should be a backup option.
