Trump Sends Airstrikes to Syria

An operation was conducted early in the morning on April 14, by the United States, Britain, and France, that sent airstrikes to Douma, Syria. According to the White House, the attacks were in response to the use of nuclear weapons on the people of Douma by the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad.

U.S. President Donald Trump said that his choice to send airstrikes to Syria was purely in retaliation to Assad’s use of chemical weapons, and has nothing to do with Syria’s ongoing civil war.

“The nations of Britain, France, and the United States of America have marshalled their righteous power against barbarism and brutality,” Trump said according to BBC.com. “The purpose of our actions tonight is to establish a strong deterrent against the production, spread, and use of chemical weapons.”

Many people, including junior Oscar Silva, are outraged and confused at the choice to attack Syria.

“I feel like Syria is going to retaliate and attack us,” Silva said. “It could lead to bigger problems.”

Silva also has a different line of thinking when it comes to what should be done about the Syrians being attacked by their own government.

“We should provide aid to the people and not necessarily attack them,” he said.

Others, such as government teacher Jim Haddox, believe that attacking Syria was a good decision.

“You have to punish people who are using chemical weapons,” Haddox said. “We are the strongest, most powerful nation in the world and we have to lead in that situation.”
