Planetarium Reopens After Seven Years
GISD reopened their planetarium, which is located at Lakeview Centennial High School, after being closed since 2011. During all those years, GISD took advantage of the time and upgraded the facility and its technology.
“We have the ability to go anywhere on Earth or in the known universe with stunning high-definition, [and] 3-D clarity,” planetarium supervisor Eric Pearce said in an interview with The Garland Texan.
The planetarium includes a 360-degree domed screen with simulations of galaxies, the Earth’s various layers, the human skeleton and more. The planetarium includes over 70 seats. The planetarium will serve as a resource for GISD teachers when teaching their students about space, human bones, planets or the stars. It is a way of getting their students out of the classroom and to participate in an activity outside of their own school.
“It’s cool to be able to have a planetarium in your own school,” freshman Tydrick Sanders said. “Out of all the schools in GISD, it’s in our school.”
In the next year, GISD plans to allow middle school and high school students to visit the state-of-the-art planetarium.
“I’m honestly excited about the planetarium reopening,” Junior Cymore Richardson said. “I’m hoping next year GISD let’s high school students witness the upgrades made, before we all graduate.”
I'm a junior at Lakeview Centennial High school and this is my first year on the newspaper and yearbook staff.
