Hectic schedules, advanced classes, and college credit have made some of Lakeview’s freshman and sophomores leave their middle school ways behind and enter into a new world.
Wanting to advance Lakeview’s dual education program and make it more unique than other High Schools the Garland Independent School district joined forces with Eastfield Community College Associate Degree Program, to start the Collegiate Academy.
Freshman and sophomore students, who passed the ACCUPLACER reading, writing, and math test, made a 75 or above on the ITBS test or above 2200 on the TAKS test were accepted into the Academy.
Students in the academy are taking many different dual courses which are classes that juniors and seniors have struggled with.
“I now have plenty of homework, when in the past I didn’t have much,” sophomore Adam Colclasire said.
When graduation time comes around in a few years these students will graduate with an associate degree and 63 hours of college credit. Most of the students in the academy see it as a way of getting free college because not everyone has a way to pay for schooling after high school.
“The classes are not harder than any normal class. Just more work. The teaching style is different too. Instead of visual things in front of you; you are lectured. Meaning that you have to pay attention to the minor details, and be more deliberate with your work because the answers are not given to you,” sophomore Violet Goforth said.
These hard working freshman and sophomores are working diligently to begin life at a young age. For these students, failure is not an option. So it’s all or nothing.
