Making a Difference

On an early autumn morning, Lakeview students lined up anxiously awaiting the opportunity to save a stranger’s life. On October 12,2011, Carter Blood Care came to Lakeview, from 8 am to 2 pm, for their annual blood drive.

One-by-one, people donated their blood in the hopes of saving a stranger’s life. Among the many benefactors was history teacher, Mr. Ranta, who participates in the blood drive every year.

“I feel I have too much blood, and it makes me feel bloated,” Mr. Ranta jokes.

Students felt that the reason they were donating blood was to do good for themselves and others by potentionally saving lives.

“But the food and the free shirt were also a plus,” junior Mildred Neil happily admits.

However, not everyone could or wanted to donate blood, mostly those who have a fear of needles, but some had other reasons too. Such as they had tattoos, did not meet age requirements, or they could obtain an allergic reaction from the needle.

“I don’t think it’s as scary as most people say it is,” senior Tiffiny Santmeyer explained.

Most of the newbies were nervous at first, but when it all happened they agreed it wasn’t that bad. In fact, everyone agreed that they’d like to do it again next year.

“I’d do it again in a heartbeat,” senior Charis Murphy commented.

As the day went on, courageous students made LC proud by their readiness to help make a difference in our society. At the end of the school day, Carter Blood Care left Lakeview with many generous donations.

If you missed your chance or couldn’t give blood this year, and you still would like to donate, please visit CarterBloodCare.org to schedule an appointment at a donor center near you.
