On October 5th, 2011, due to a long struggle with pancreatic cancer, the world lost one of its most innovative and ingenious pioneers of technology.

Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple, changed the way people around the world communicate, with his many inventions; the technology world will never be the same.

Jobs has always been an intelligent thinker, although during his early years he was known as the class clown, and his teachers often bribed him to study. Once in high school Jobs spent his free time at Hewlett-Packard, where he became close friends with fellow computer geek, Steve Wozniak.

In 1975, Jobs and Wozniak started assembling Apple I computers in Jobs’ garage, and sold them to hobbyists. The first few years since the start of Jobs’ career, he earned about $140 million in profit. Now, people around the world enjoy a variety of Apple products such as the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and iPod.

Although the iPhone 4S resembles the previous model, the iPhone 4, it includes many new features such as iCloud and Siri.

When asked about her iPhone, senior Stevi Bradley claimed, “I can’t go a day without it. I do everything on it, games, texting, calls, and calendar. It’s my life.”

In dedication to his memory, many fans visited and placed sticky notes on the Palo Alto Apple store. Although Jobs is gone, he has drastically altered the way the world communicates, and will be remembered forever.

Though Steve Jobs is gone, his contributions to Apple’s long lived legacy marches on. On October 5, 2011, Jobs passed on after a long fight with pancreatic cancer, leaving the iPhone 4S as his last contribution to the world.

Unfortunately, the one unanswered question, that is killing tech nerds everywhere, presents itself: “Will Apple get worse, or improve without one of its main founding fathers?”

“I hope it will be the same, but many companies fail after a major contributor leaves,” junior Destinee Cain said.

After five months of silence, Apple finally introduces their new iPhone 4S. No need to worry if you are not an AT&T customer, the new iPhone is currently offered on Verizon and Sprint, giving the customer a little more freedom to choose their preferred or contracted carrier.

With the brand new Siri voice command, and 1080p HD video recording, the company calls it the “most amazing iPhone yet”. Although, to one Apple customer that may not be the case.

“The iPhone 3G has an awful battery life,” sophomore Hannah Taylor said, “I’m hoping that the newer iPhone improves it’s battery life.”

Did Apple correct this problem, or can we expect better quality from other iPhone aspects? The iPhone 4S runs on iOS 5, which has a new all-in-one notification center allowing you to view your texts, emails, calendar events, and more in one area. iMessage allows you to send messages and more to any iPad and iPod user, and it also doubles as a sort of I.M. system for other iPhone users with the iOS 5 software.

“I don’t know about the battery life of the iPhone, but the Siri voice command seems really awesome!” junior Kaitlyn Walker explained.

With all of the new coming aspects such as Siri and iMessage on the iPhone 4S, it’s a tough decision whether or not it’ll be better without Jobs, but don’t take anyone’s word for it without trying it out yourself.

On an early autumn morning, Lakeview students lined up anxiously awaiting the opportunity to save a stranger’s life. On October 12,2011, Carter Blood Care came to Lakeview, from 8 am to 2 pm, for their annual blood drive.

One-by-one, people donated their blood in the hopes of saving a stranger’s life. Among the many benefactors was history teacher, Mr. Ranta, who participates in the blood drive every year.

“I feel I have too much blood, and it makes me feel bloated,” Mr. Ranta jokes.

Students felt that the reason they were donating blood was to do good for themselves and others by potentionally saving lives.

“But the food and the free shirt were also a plus,” junior Mildred Neil happily admits.

However, not everyone could or wanted to donate blood, mostly those who have a fear of needles, but some had other reasons too. Such as they had tattoos, did not meet age requirements, or they could obtain an allergic reaction from the needle.

“I don’t think it’s as scary as most people say it is,” senior Tiffiny Santmeyer explained.

Most of the newbies were nervous at first, but when it all happened they agreed it wasn’t that bad. In fact, everyone agreed that they’d like to do it again next year.

“I’d do it again in a heartbeat,” senior Charis Murphy commented.

As the day went on, courageous students made LC proud by their readiness to help make a difference in our society. At the end of the school day, Carter Blood Care left Lakeview with many generous donations.

If you missed your chance or couldn’t give blood this year, and you still would like to donate, please visit CarterBloodCare.org to schedule an appointment at a donor center near you.

The Texas Rangers and the St. Louis Cardinals go head-to-head in the 2011 World Series, which is the Rangers’ second straight appearance in the annual Fall Classic. The Rangers trampled the Tampa Bay Rays during the American League Division Series, and dominated over the Detroit Tigers in the American League Championship Series.

The Rangers played the Tigers on October 15, 2011 and conquered them in a 15-5 run lead in the top of the 9th during ALCS game 6, winning them the American League Champion title.

“I was nervous when we played at Comerica Park in Detroit, because our record for winning there wasn’t so great.” sophomore Tyler Trimble said, “But I knew that we’d pull through, bringing the series back to Arlington!”

The Rangers are clearly not a bad team, because this is their second straight World Series. So most of the diehard fans are offended by band-wagoners, the people who only began watching once the Rangers entered the World Series.

“If you’re not a true fan that watches the Rangers whether they’re winning or not, then you shouldn’t even be allowed to call yourself a fan!” junior Elizabeth Allen said, “I go to games everytime I get the chance! I’m a diehard fan, and I love that people love my team. But I do not like band-wagoners!”

When you’re a true Rangers fan, being called a tag-a-long fan, is a major insult. Most people would get pretty upset, and Trimble is one of them.

“If I got called a band-wagoner, I’d just laugh.” Trimble says. “Because the people that are calling you one, are just fans of the teams that didn’t make it. My team is IN the World Series, your team is sitting at home on their couch watching my boys play.”

All of the Rangers players have an extremely big part in the teams’ success. Whether it was making an out, hitting a homerun, or throwing the last strike. In baseball, homeruns are somewhat difficult to hit. However, sometimes the pitcher throws a ball just right, and the player batting can hit a big one. Nelson Cruz, the ALCs MVP, hit six homeruns during the ALCS. But that doesn’t mean that he’s everyone’s new favorite.

“My favorite player now, and forever, would have to be Josh Hamilton,” Allen states, “I play left-field in softball. Josh plays left-field for the Rangers. Since we play the same position, I know exactly how he feels almost all of the time.”

Some may describe the Rangers’ second straight World Series appearance as amazing, victorious, or even breathe-taking. The series will keep you on the edge of your seat as the two best teams in the MLB go against each other.

One of Lakeview Centennial’s, very own, principals has been selected to participate in the Brazil Administrator Exchange Program.

The Administrator Exchange Program is a short term, mutual exchange opportunity that allows the countries of: Argentina, United States, Greece, India, Italy, Mexico, Brazil, and several other countries, to exchange school principals. Out of the many United States principals considered, Dr. Hudson was awarded this prestigious opportunity to share and experience another country’s culture, while simultaneously mentoring foreign principals on ours.

“I chose Brazil because it was a whole different continent with different educations,” Dr. Hudson said, “It’s supposedly the happening place.”

This glorious gift of an opportunity did not just fall from the sky and land in his hands. Dr. Hudson applied for this program as if it were a college or job application, and anxiously awaited to receive that long, anticipated letter of approval from Washington.

“The five words to describe this experience are: anxiety, excited, curious, hopeful and ready,” Hudson explained.

Principal Hudson describes his thoughts as intrigued and excited to meet his co-workers Imirene de Araujo, Adriana da Costa, and Adriana Bonatto. The administrators will be here October 15th through November 3rd, a total of two weeks.

“ Naturally I thought it would be interesting to see Brazil’s education process,” Hudson said.

Hudson will travel this upcoming summer to Brazil for a total of two weeks, where he will be engaging in international interests centered on Brazil’s school, students, and communities.

“In America, education is a right.” Hudson stated. “In other countries, education is a privilege, therefore they look at education a little differently. Looking in the past, America was an education powerhouse. But now the United States has fallen behind the other countries. Why wouldn’t I be interested in seeing what I can do to enhance what we do here at Lakeview Centennial High school?”

By: Ashley Tarver

As citizens of the United States, we are the people and our voices being heard are values we treasure, but only few people use their voices, like one driven student.

Freshman Aaliyah Gibson went to Austin to put in her innovative act, which was passed in the Youth & Government System and was well received. The act was designed to help citizens apply and receive disability in a much faster pace than normal.

“Citizens that apply for disability, usually takes the government at least four years to approve it or not,” Gibson said. “With this act, the citizens would get their approval at least within 200 days.”

This act would provide positive results to the individuals applying and the employees working on the cases.

“People could get their disability faster and the case load of case workers would be less and they can get work done more effectively,” Gibson said.

She traveled to Austin for a three day competition, in which the students learned how to create a bill and the process to get it passed.

“It was fun traveling to Austin and learning the process of making a bill. I hoped my bill would get passed,” freshman Gibson said.

Gibson was confident and had faith in her act because she is also hearing impaired. She knows how it feels to grow up being hearing impaired and having to wait forever to be approved for disability.

“I know what you have to go through when you have to wait a long time for disability and it’s tough,” the inspirational student said.

Though the act wasn’t passed into a bill, it was still highly and favorable recommended. Gibson hopes in the future to become a lawyer, go off into politics, and continue to make more bills to better our government.

No more welding, priming, or buffing! Auto body and welding are moving from their Lakeview home to the distant turfs of South Garland High School.

In an effort to balance out attendance in schools, auto body and welding are moving to South Garland starting in 2013.

“They’re not getting rid of auto body and welding, they’re just moving it,” auto body teacher Greg Baughman explains.

While it’s been rumored that welding and auto body will be moving next year, everyone can relax. South Garland is building a whole new section dedicated to just these two programs, so it will take at least until 2013 to move.

“Well, it’s going to be a really great thing for South,” auto body teacher Mark Baty jokes.

Along with the programs go Greg Baughman Mark Baty, and Jim Barnett the beloved auto body and welding teachers.

“I’m worried about starting all over, and that there may not be enough room. Auto body is a big shop,” Mr.Baughman says, “But the new opportunity could be really cool.”

While teachers and principals seem to be supportive about it students aren’t taking the change to easily.

“I don’t think that they should move it,” sophomore Shelby Sanderson shares, “It’s a big part of Lakeview and a big part of why people come here.”

Students’ will have to choose either to transfer schools or pick another elective in its place.

“That’s why we have school of choice,” principal Gerald Hudson says, “So that if you want to pursue cosmetology you go to South, or if you have an interest in agriculture you go to Naaman Forest.”

In addition to their cosmetology and electronics programs the auto body and welding program will expand their liberal arts curriculum.

“Sometimes you move programs to other schools to help out enrollment,” Dr. Hudson said, “We have magnet and other college programs to sustain our own enrollment.”

Despite a sad separation auto body and welding will carry on their legacy at South Garland for many years to come.

The lunch bell rings and a massive whirlwind of students race from all ends of the school to secure their place in the lunch lines.

by Ashley Tarver

The lunch bell rings and a massive whirlwind of students race from all ends of the school to secure their place in the lunch lines.

Although the students grow and grow from year to year, the cafeteria workers remain the same few employees.

“The workers in the cafeteria have been here for years,” Assistant Principal Mr. Saenz said. “Only a few changed, but they rarely ever do.”

The staff in the cafeteria may not change or grow, but the students are ever so changing and escalating. An extra increase of about 400 students, mainly freshmen, has the cafeteria filled and lunch lines over flowing.

“I feel like the lunches are packed and if we had another lunch period then everything will be a-okay,” senior William Anguiano said.

Most students may not get along with each other, but when it comes to lunch they’re all in unison on their feelings of an overcrowding cafeteria and needing more chow time.

“Lunch should be longer,” senior Carlos Arias said. “Most people don’t get to eat at all and it angers me.”

With so many people all trying to get the same thing for lunch, many people hardly get to eat. Even when they finally get their lunch, there’s only a few minutes to eat, causing them to be late getting back to class.

“I feel that they [the lines] are extremely long and in order for people to eat and get to class on time, lunches needs to be longer,” senior Lazarus Maze.

Making the transition from middle school to high school, gave the freshmen more lunch options, but even more people to share the cafeteria with. They, too, agree with the rest of the student body about the scenes of the lunchroom.
